The awkward page
Canvas is not a wall
It cuts both ways, and it is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask about before you book a fortnight of it.
Sound
Tents ten metres apart on a still night are not private the way a hotel room is. This surprises people, and it is entirely avoidable information.
- How far apart are the tents? Twenty-five metres behaves very differently from ten.
- Are they staggered, or in a line facing the same view?
- Is there planting or rock between them, or open ground?
- Is there a generator, and what hours does it run? Some camps are silent after nine; some hum all night.
- Where is the main area relative to the tents? A late, loud dinner carries.
Good camps have thought about all of this. Less good ones put the tents where the view is and hope for the best, which is a defensible decision and one you should know about.
The vehicle
"Private vehicle" is not a standard term and it is worth pinning down in writing.
| What you might be told | What to ask |
|---|---|
| "You will have a private vehicle" | Guaranteed, or only if the camp is not full? |
| "Private vehicle on request" | What does it cost, and can we book it now? |
| "Maximum four guests per vehicle" | Four including us, or four others? |
| "Private guide" | Assigned to us for the whole stay, or for each drive? |
Staff routes
Every camp has a service route: how food gets from the kitchen to the tents, how laundry moves, how the night watchman patrols. You want to know it does not pass your deck at six in the morning.
Camps designed well have a back-of-house circulation you will never see. Camps converted from something else sometimes do not.
Being collected after dark
At most camps in big-game country you are escorted to and from your tent after dark. This is a real safety measure, not theatre. There is nothing between the camp and the animals.
It is worth knowing in advance because it affects the shape of an evening. Wanting to go back to your tent means finding somebody, which takes two minutes and is entirely normal, and which some couples find charming and some find a small friction across fourteen nights.
The realistic summary
You can get very close to complete privacy on a safari, and the levers are: a camp with well-spaced tents, separate dining tables, a private vehicle, and a tent at the end of the line. That combination exists at almost every level above the entry point and costs far less than a whole-camp buyout.
